EMG/Nerve Conduction Testing

EMG/Nerve Conduction Testing

Electrodiagnostic testing is used to study nerve and muscle related diseases. Conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, a pinched nerve in the back, or diabetic neuropathy can be assessed with nerve testing.

To prepare for an EMG, please do the following:

  • Bathe or shower on the day of the test; wash arms and legs well to remove body oils
  • Do no use lotion, bath oils or creams
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes, and remember to bring shorts and a short-sleeved shirt or sleeveless shirt
  • You may eat and drink before this test
  • Bring a list of medications you are taking
  • You may take regular medications as prescribed, as they do not affect test results
  • If you are taking blood-thinning medications or pyridostigmine ( Mestinon), please contact our office prior to your exam

Tell the health care provider if you:

  • bruise easily
  • have hemophilia
  • have a pacemaker
  • have a skin infection
