Parkinson’s Disease: How Can Therapy Help?

What Is LSVT?

Lee Silverman Voice Training (LSVT) is a program originally designed to help people who have Parkinson’s Disease “recalibrate” their VOICE and their BODY. LSVT LOUD focuses on helping individuals speak at a more normal volume. LSVT BIG focuses on increasing the size of one’s movements throughout the body. Some of the most noticeable symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease include difficulty projecting one’s voice which can affect communication with loved ones and smaller, shuffling movements which affect mobility and self-care tasks. These are just the things that LSVT LOUD and LSVT BIG focus on!

Both LSVT LOUD and LSVT BIG have been extensively researched and because of the number of successful outcomes, these programs are now considered a “gold standard” in Parkinson’s care. Both programs are designed with two aspects. One aspect is a very specific set of exercises, and the other aspect is completely tailored to meet the client’s needs. LSVT LOUD and LSVT BIG treatments can only be administered by therapists who are trained and certified in each program.

LSVT Demonstration

LSVT LOUD

LSVT LOUD is a program made up of exercises that help to strengthen the voice box and the speech system with the goal to return voice to a normal volume by TALKING LOUD. As a result of these exercises, intonation and facial expressions can also improve. In addition to the exercises, each client will practice phrases that are important in their daily interactions with family and friends.

LSVT BIG

LSVT BIG is a program made up of exercises that work every muscle in the body with the goal of returning movement to a normal size by MOVING BIG. In addition to these exercises, there is time to practice BIG walking and customized tasks. Some of these tasks can include dressing, writing, getting in and out of bed, as well as participating in a leisure activity. The list is endless.

I Think Lsvt Is For Me, What’s Next?

LSVT LOUD and LSVT BIG use a very prescriptive program. It is to be completed in the clinic 4 days a week for 4 weeks. Each program is 1 hour long. There is “homework” associated with each program which consists of doing daily exercises and practicing specific functional tasks in your daily routine. This may sound like a lot, but the effort put into it will be worth it! To get started, all you need is a prescription from your doctor.

What Happens When I Complete The Program?

The exercises and techniques that are learned in LSVT LOUD and LSVT BIG continue! The recommendation and expectation is that these exercises are completed daily to continue the effort of recalibration. Parkinson’s is a progressive disease, and work must be done daily to overcome the physiological changes so that you can #LIVEMORE.

At Moreau Physical Therapy, we are committed to helping our clients do just that! Some of our LSVT certified clinicians have taken it one step further. They have become certified as LOUD FOR LIFE and BIG FOR LIFE instructors. With this certification, Moreau offers the graduates of the LSVT LOUD and LSVT BIG programs an opportunity to participate in a monthly BIG and LOUD for LIFE support group. During these meetings, graduates come together as a group to exercise while supporting, encouraging, and learning from one another. The goal is always to get LOUDER and BIGGER and have some fun along the way!
